12:16 pm - New Puppy!
So.. Im new to the community... Under special circumstances, I did not get to do the research I wanted too before I become family to a 3 month old yorkshire terrier...

He wasnt in the greatest surroundings and covered in motor oil. 2 baths in Dawn dish soap later and we have somewhat of a normal puppy. We've named him Moe. He answered instantly to his name so I think he likes it.

Spoiled already. But a problem has risen up out of the wood works.. Moe likes the kitty pooh.. Any suggestions on how to detour this problematic behavior? Once he is bigger he wont be able to fit into the kitty door to the litter box.. but until then.... I was thinking about putting up a gate around the litter box until then.. We do clean the litter every day but he seems to get there before we do! brat.

Also, any suggestions on coat and eye care would be GREAT! Training is already under way.. in 1 week he has learned to walk on a leash with minimal bad behavior and we are now working on sit. Stay will be next! Plans for him would be some fun agility and he even gets to be my stables mascot! I am a stable manager so he and my larger dog, bud, get to go with me regularly if not every day!

Thank you!
Megan, Bud AND Moe.

I will post pictures but I havent found my cable yet! :{(

Congrats!

Our yorkie puppy, Brody, found the kitty litter box first thing too. GROSS! We tried a small rubbermaid tote (4 or 5 gallon?), that's the same size as a litter box, but at least twice as deep. Our cat didn't seem to mind the change in the least & it's too tall/high for Brody to go 'hunting' in. ;-) Cheap & easy!

Good luck! And enjoy your new little man. There's NEVER a dull moment with a terrier around!

I too recommend getting a large plastic tote to use as a litter box. Unfortunately, cat poop is like caviar to dogs! Yuck! If you don't want to do that, then yeah, you'll need to either elevate it or put a gate around it, because Yorkies are quite determined little pups!

I clean my Yorkie's eyes every morning with a soft tissue. She hated it at first but now she's used to it and doesn't fuss too terribly much.

It sounds like you're already doing a wonderful job, and bless you for rescuing that little guy. Congrats on the new wonderful addition to your family!

I don't clean my Yorkies eye, only remove the gunk every now and then, my Maltese has more of a wet eye problem than my yorkie, we have a NZ made product called Bright eyes which works like magic.

Both my dogs search for kitty poop in the garden as soon as their allowed out!

We just yell NO! But that doesn't stop them! They are just keeping the area clean by eating it to remove them. They eat them because cats don't digest their food properly, so it seems like food to them, however this is VERY BAD FOR THEM! It can get them very sick and you could end up taking your dog to the vet with an upset stomach! I suggest you put a gate up, or even put the litter box somewhere up high where your dog cannot reach, or just take the litter box out all at once?!

I don't think you can help this situation, all dogs eat poop.

Good luck!
